Improv, with a touch of theatre

In Gypsy Tribes, we gather three distinct groups.

1) American Gypsies- Over-the-top attitude, free spirited, large movements and full use of very large skirts.

2) ATS-inspired Tribal Improv
Caroleena's creation is the inspiration for the whole thing, and we honor the roots by always keeping one tribe in the ATS style.  We mostly create our own combos, heavily influenced by FatChance BellyDance.

3) Tribal Fusion- The Ooey-Gooey Tribe. This group also dances with swords.

ALL THREE use the cued system of group dancing.

AND THEN WE ADD A STORY LINE-
This is really a great addition to dancing!  We've had so much fun coming up with ways of telling a story while we dance.  Three sisters reunited under the desert moon with their daughters coming too... The Matriarch of an extended family trying to keep control... A Witch calling her dead dance sisters home to dance with those still living...

Flash paper ignites!  Marvelously colored skirts are thrown about! Swords threaten!

WE ARE CREATORS!  This is something we've been working on for almost 2 years now, and it's really starting to come together.  It's all about the sisterhood, here.  Support, create, work hard, tell a story, dance with your sisters.

We hope you enjoy the experience~

Beginning American Tribal Gypsy:

American Gypsy is a romantic, incredibly lively form of dance that is inspired by the Romany, Spanish, Indian and Middle Eastern cultures.  What else could it be, here in the great melting pot? Laughing

I've created Monday's performance class to focus on learning combinations, and then interacting with other dancers in a "call and respond format" where one group playfully challenges another.  We'll begin with a Nia-inspired warm up and then move into the combinations and moving around with attitude and energy.  This class is designed to really lift the spirits and release the creative gypsy in every woman!  I hope you love it as much as I do~

A FEW THOUGHTS~
I've discovered that no matter how often I try to bring the word Rom, or Romany into the vocabulary, folks recognize the word "Gypsy" first.  I was lucky enought to take a seminar and purchase academic material from Artemis Mourat, who has studied first hand and extensively the Rromany, or Gypsy culture.  She made it very clear that to this group of people, being called a Gypsy is as offensive as referring to an African American with the N word. Thus, my attempts to exchange Gypsy with Rom.

However, I have also come to recognize that to the general American public, the word Gypsy has a romantic connotation, and isn't meant as an insult.  It is also very firmly entrenched in our vocabulary, and I'm no longer going to fight it, but I will do my best to pass on the information I have been fortunate enough to find.  ~Blessings to All~
